“Why do you stand here every morning, don’t you want to get your work done?
I had one of the students ask me this morning. I’d like to share my answer to her. I stand out the front of the school most mornings because I want to build relationships not only with our students but with parents and community members too. I want to purposefully meet and greet the adults that trust their students to us and I want to be approachable for all families. Not being in my office is more friendly than a formal meeting in my office.
Standing outside of a morning helps me to understand the families that come to our school. I get to see many of our students and understand more about their lives. Sometimes it’s little things like clarifying for parents what was said at home or confirming news that goes home. I do get to see who might be extra tired today or perhaps even quite grumpy. Sometimes a quick “Good Morning”, can be the difference between a good day and a bad one.
I’m much better nowadays with names and I firmly believe greeting children by their name helps them to know that I respect them, and they are a valued member of our school. The opportunity to touch base with parents, to ask how things have been for their children in the first days of school. Sometimes too, the casual nature of the discussion supports families to share confidential information. Some parents also share that they went to this school – and were scared of their Principal. I don’t want that in our school.
I use the duty time of a morning to touch base with families and students. A school isn’t always the easiest place to work. Sometimes difficult decisions are made, and difficult discussions must be had to ensure every child is getting the best possible education.
I love standing out the front of our school most mornings, greeting our students and their families.
It’s a small thing but it makes a lot of difference!
4/5 Grech have done lots of work.
They have created some posters that describe the different ways they are smart.
They drew and then labelled toolboxes of strategies they like to use when they aren’t in the green zone.
Handwriting we can eat!
Summer and her classmates in Mrs Clifford’s class used the Tomato and Cucumber salad recipe as their handwriting today – then they got to eat it!
