Sometimes school is about more than just the classroom….
Today was one of those days.
Not only did we have people at the Aquatic Centre for the Swimming and Water Safety Program we had other students were receiving their “Smiley” purchases – time on the school bike track. It was a fabulous day … a little chilly but with the sun shining we made the most of the opportunity to get outside. We’re hoping to spend more time on the bike track moving forward. Thanks to Perry and Phoenix who helped out getting bikes ready, pumping up tyres and supporting nervous students.
While this was happening, we had people from Mona’s 24 Carrot Garden project working with students to plant seedlings. Most classes had the time to go out and use the newly designed trays that ensure the seedling, and the full root system is planted in the soil without being damaged, as opposed to what happens with the seedlings from the commercial outlets, especially when little fingers are involved. Thanks to Mrs Clifford who stays in close contact with Mona. Thanks also to Simon and the 24 Carrot Team!
Students are coming home this afternoon with Term 3 reporting documents. This includes information regarding your child’s approach and attitude to learning as well as two pieces of their work annotated as Evidence of Learning. Please take the time to review these documents and talk to your children about their learning. Attendance is also noted on reports. It would be nice if every child were attending as much as possible, ideally 100% attendance is what we would like. Anyone over 95% can be very proud of themselves. We would like to see all parents come in for a parent teacher meeting in Week 2 of Term 3. Bookings will be open on Schoolzine from the beginning of the holidays. Thanks to all teachers who put in an enormous amount of effort to produce this information and to Mrs Fielding for all her hard work in the preparation and printing of the documentation.
As the holidays draw closer I encourage you to enjoy the coming to weeks with “our children” and send them all back to us safe and happy on Monday July 22.

During the first week of Playberry, we read ‘Starting School’ by Jane Godwin which prompted us to reflect upon our experiences in Kinder so far. We spoke about our routines, school expectations and the best bits about school. It was lovely to observe so many students talking about making friends, playing in the playground and their love for the canteen!
We responded to the text by painting our favourite bits about school and answered the question:
“What is the best thing about school?”
Prep Jardine have really settled into their daily routines now that we are halfway through the year. These include literacy, numeracy, science, HASS, sharing, library, buddy visits with Grade 3/4 Marmion-Marshall, and other specialist subjects. A big focus in Maths this term has been breaking numbers into their smaller parts. Science learning moved from plants to materials, and how we can describe these by their properties. Also, the students have been thinking about Places and what makes them special to different people.
Along with the whole school, we continue with Playberry each morning where we learn new letters, sounds and how to blend them into words. The Preps enjoy exploring letters and words all around the school, and the frost this week was a new, fun way to write and draw with our fingertips!
A favourite time of the day for Prep students is sharing time, where students get the opportunity to have the spotlight on them and their interests. This time encourages Oral Language development, listening, storytelling, and constructing interesting questions. Posing and responding to questions is important for many learning areas. Using sharing time to explore who, what, when, where, why and how questions, and how these differ to comments and connections, builds questioning skills that can be used across different learning times.
Next term, Prep students will be linking their school and home learning environments by sharing items that extend on their Science materials and Geography units of study.
We watched a video about how to make fire sticks. We made fire sticks out of paper and on the window we put fire flames. We think it looks great.

NAIDOC week is rapidly approaching so this week 1/2 A learnt about leewarre (firesticks) with the stunning Orb (Fire (theorb.tas.gov.au)) resource. We gained knowledge about this important cultural practice through craft, group work and discussion.
Ashton decorated the “bark” of his leewarre with oil pastels. The Tasmanian Aboriginals use ochre to create symbolic patterns.
Hunter’s drawing of a firestick.

In 1/2B we are filled with pride at the incredible progress and achievements we made this term. We successfully established several daily routines, including Daily PE led by the Grade 6 leaders, Playberry Literacy learning, reading groups, and Maths routines. We explored and understood sound energy in our science unit and researched the past and present of communication technologies.

We also nourished our little community, working well together as a whole.

3/4A have been participating in the Swim and Water Safety Program for the past two weeks. We have learnt so much in such a short time and not just about swimming! We have learnt to attempt challenging things, trust that our life jackets will hold us up, remember what we could do yesterday, the value of beginning on time, looking after our belongings and getting changed super quickly.
We have also learnt the importance of water safety, always being with an adult near water, never going into a boat without an adult and what to do if we get stuck in deep water.
Most importantly, we have participated in everything our teachers have asked us to do and followed instructions well. Singing on the bus on the way to the pool and back was a lot of fun too!
In Grade 4/5 we have been learning about perimeter and area. We know that perimeter is the total length around the boundary of a shape, and area is the space inside a shape. We have been practicing measuring the sides of shapes, adding them together and calculating the perimeter. We have also been using grids to find the area of shapes, and to create our own shapes with a particular area.
As a fun activity, we were given the task to design a robot. Our robot needed to have a head, neck, body, arms and legs. Each of these body parts needed to be a different colour. We then had to work out the area of each body part, and the total area of our robot with all body parts combined. Here are some of our robot designs.
This term in 5/6B we have been exploring micro-organisms and fungi. In literacy, we have been working hard on creating booklets for fungi by reading interpreting and paraphrasing reading materials. We got hands on, exploring fungi around the school and assisting 5/6A with planting the upgraded 24 Carrot Garden on site!
We have a large amount of lost property, as it comes to the end of Term 2, we strongly encourage students/parents to come and claim any lost goods.
