I’m going to make it very short this week. I wish to thank parents and community members that supported Book Week by helping children with costumes and attending our parade. It was a wonderful day – the energy in the school was wonderful!
For the rest of my article this week, I would like to share with you some of the wonderful displays we have up around our school showcasing children’s work. As always – you are most welcome to come in and browse the displays when dropping children off or when picking them up.

In the Earth and space science unit of learning, 1/2B learned about earth’s natural satellite – the Moon. We discovered that the Moon does rotate, but it rotates at the same rate as it orbits Earth, which is why we always see the same side of the moon from Earth. The Moon orbits around Earth, completing one revolution in about a month. The Moon does not emit light; the moonlight we see is the reflection of sunlight. Due to the Moon’s movement, the reflection light varies, which is what we have learnt about the different phases of the moon. We had a lot of fun discovering the different phases of the moon with our Oreo cookies activity.
In grade 4/5 we have been learning about collecting data and displaying it on graphs, in particular line graphs. We collected data on the temperature of Hobart, Melbourne and Brisbane over a seven-day period. Once we had collected all the data, we worked as a class to display it on a line graph. This allowed us to easily compare the difference between the temperatures of each of the three capital cities throughout the seven days. We found that Hobart and Melbourne had similar temperatures, with their lines crossing over and even falling in the same place on one day. However overall Hobart had the lowest temperature. We found that Brisbane’s line stayed much higher than Hobart and Melbourne’s, with its temperatures usually falling in the low to mid-twenties.
Next, we each selected three capital cities of our choice from around Australia, and recorded their temperatures over seven days. We then worked independently on creating a line graph that displayed the data for all three of our cities. Here are some of the graphs we created.
Book Week was last week and two of our students, Carlee and Ruby, did an amazing job at hosting the parade. Well done.
This term 5/6B have been diving into the world of persuasion during literacy. In particular, we have been learning how to hook the reader in to our argument by making them think with the use of rhetorical questions. We have learned to improve our persuasive skills by using high modality (strong) words and emotive language to make the reader feel a certain way. Maths has been focussed on decimals, fractions and percentages which has tied in beautifully with the Olympic Games. We have begun our very own Spud-lympics in the classroom which sees all students researching various countries, competing in events and using and comparing decimals in real world scenarios.

Book Week 2024 – Reading is Magic
Last week was Book Week! Every class did an amazing job to decorate their classroom door in a book theme in the week leading up to the event and other staff in the school also decorated their doors (including the office doors, the library door and senior staff doors).
On Wednesday morning we held our 2024 Book Week Parade in the gym, and it was bright, colourful and fun. Each class was invited to parade around, and our roving reporters interviewed a number of students to get some of their reactions.
Every lunch time during the week there were fun activities in the library, hosted by staff where students were able to express their creativity in a range of ways including: investigating the ‘Magic of Reading’, colouring and painting bookmarks, making wands, decorating Meg and Mog masks and creating magical scratch it art.
To top it off, throughout the week there was a treasure hunt for the ‘Green Sheep’ hidden in different places around the school. The daily winners earned themselves some Smilies!
These events do not happen without lots of input and extra time by members of our school and community and a big thank you must go to:
Jo Wrigley and Brooke Toppin for sparking an interest across the school, decorating the library in the theme of Reading is Magic, coordinating lunch time activities in the library and sharing details and posters across the school
Rachel Cooper for organising notices and a lovely morning tea
Our support staff Kelly, Sari and Liz for hosting a lunchtime activity
Sarah Fielding for getting everyone organised for Book Week early this term, ordering the shortlisted books and coordinating people to ensure everything was planned and ready on the day
Josh Scott for liaising between classes and administration, ensuring the parade was planned and set out, organising book prizes and supporting the hosts on the day
Seb Wood and Emma Miley for hiding the Green Sheep each day
our mystery judges for selecting our class best dressed winners
Carlee and Ruby for hosting the parade and making the event fun for everyone
all of our staff and students for getting into the week and dressing up on Wednesday, and
all of our families and community who supported by coordinating costumes and attending events during the week in support of reading.
