An enormous thank you to two of our staff leaving our team and moving on to bigger things!
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of Miss Rose O’Rourke who is leaving Springfield Gardens at the end of this term to commence her teaching career.
Rose is an amazing teacher assistant who maintains a calm, firm nature in even the most challenging situations. She has developed strong, learning based relationships with many of our students, we will really miss this.
I have had the pleasure of watching Rose develop into a child centred educator and am very confident that she will be an asset to the teaching team at Glenora. Congratulations on your appointment Rose, may you have a long and wonderful career full of the wonderful experience’s life brings when you are entrusted with the care and education of other people’s children.
Dimitri – our soccer star and flexible, adaptable, easy going teacher assistant is also leaving Springfield Gardens to pursue other things. Many people may not be aware, but Dimitri came to us looking for work to support himself while he pursued his soccer career. We put him on for a day seeing an opportunity to utilise Dimitri’s unique skills. He very quickly became a more regular member of the Springfield team. Thank you for your hard work Dimitri, your commitment to our students and the perseverance you also demonstrated – even in the most difficult circumstances!

Reading Reward – 75 Nights for Morning Tea with the Principal
What a celebration it was!
It was my absolute pleasure to host Morning Tea with the Principal for the 35 or so students who have achieved 75 nights of home reading. We may have to move to another room next time ?
We have had a successful term in Kinder with lots of growth! Our Playberry literacy sessions have been focused on learning letter sounds, letter names and handwriting. It has been amazing to see so many children working hard to write the correct formation for the letter ‘s’ and ‘a’. Each week, we create artwork to represent the new letter sound that we have learnt. Last week we all created glittery moons to help us remember ‘m’ is for moon! We have been creating nests this week for the letter ‘n’.
Kinder O’Neill hopes everyone has a safe holiday and we are excited for more learning in term 4!
The Preps have been exploring materials by building houses for little animals, numbers up to 20, caring for special places around our school, and developing their writing through a range of different prompts. Also, Ms Toppin crafts her weekly lessons around a different Eric Carle book and accompanies these with a beautiful art project. This term we have also had Book Week, Science Week, and Fire Safety.
The Preps considered what materials they needed to make a warm, safe and cosy home for a little pet, then created these out of waterproof, soft, and transparent materials. Using number lines, they matched numerals to names, and counted out groups of objects. After choosing their favourite place in our school (the garden, gym, big playground, Adventure playground, and canteen to name a few) they thought about how they could look after these places by picking up rubbish and keeping them clean. And their writing! Putting together what they are learning in Playberry and using letter sounds and Heart words to create interesting sentences. Next term they will turn these into amazing stories.
Many of the Preps enjoyed the principal’s special morning tea for reading for 75 Nights or more. Thank you to families for supporting your child’s reading development at home so that they can enjoy rewards at school.
I would also like to give thanks and congratulations to our amazing Teacher Assistant Rose. She has been supporting us from the beginning of the year with her calm, patience and good humour. She leaves us to become a teacher, and what a great one she will be! Thanks for everything Rose, the kids and staff here will miss you.
Aboriginal stories help us connect to and understand one of the oldest living cultures on our planet. 1/2 A enjoyed Gregg Dresse’s new take on the original Dreamtime story about the Rainbow Serpent, Super Snake. Here are some of the similarities and differences students noticed between the stories:
Term 3 has been an exciting journey of learning, exploration, and creativity for our Grade 1/2B students! We’ve immersed ourselves in a range of topics and activities that have fostered our critical thinking, imagination, and teamwork.
In literacy, students worked on using adjectives and their five senses to enrich their sentences. They’ve also had a good understanding of compound sentences, using conjunctions to express their ideas clearly.
Our geography lessons were full of excitement as students learned mapping skills and explored the concept of natural, managed, and constructed places. They worked hard on their class projects. Their hard work had showcased during our school assembly.
Our math focused on telling time, both analog and digital clocks. The students have had lots of fun developing these life skills.
Our 1/2B students have been incredible at every step, showing resilience in facing challenges, a deep curiosity about the world around them, and great interest for learning.
Term three has really flown by. 3/4A have had so many different experiences beyond usual classroom learning. We wrote a list of everything we could think of, and we were surprised at how long it was. Below, students had the opportunity to write about their favourite parts of term three.
Liam – Prodigy because I use the laptop.
Jimmy – I loved doing the cinquains because it was challenging.
Lincoln – It was kind of fun to go to the movies because I got snacks.
Mason – I like PE because I get to run.
Kella – Maths because I can do stuff like it; I like the movies because we all got to watch the movie and eat popcorn; I like Friday Fun because we get to do stuff; I like the Olympics because we can watch videos; I like cooking the mushrooms because it was fun cutting them; I like fire safety because we got to see the fire outfits; I like the card games because we got to play the game so much. I like fractions because we got to do pizza stuff.
Hailey – I LOVED ‘RU-OK?” Day because we got to go outside with chalk, and we got to outline our bodies which was really fun and I would do it again!
Ariana – I mostly loved “RU-OK Day” because it was really fun to trace each other’s bodies with chalk. Me and my group were having so much fun. I especially LOVED writing “RU-OK” everywhere. We did it in rainbow, but it eventually washed out. I hope we’ll be able to do it again!
Archer – I like ICT because it’s fun and it’s fun to play. PE because I get lots of energy sometimes and I like to burn it off. Maths games – it’s fun to play.
Mohammad – I love PE because PE is fun; ICT because ICT is fun, and we play.
Piper – I liked when the class dressed up for Book Week. I loved when the teacher lets us go on computers.
Sam – Growing and cooking mushrooms – it was delicious. Fractions – it was fun to learn. Maths is fun. Excursion to the movies and the park. It was so fun. I was so happy, happy, happy. Prodigy is so fun. ICT is so fun to learn. Music – I love it. Art is fun to learn. Friday Fun is so fffuuunnn.
Kaysi – I enjoyed Prodigy, maths and cooking in term 3.
This last term in 3/4B the class has been growing mushrooms! This was a class effort that involved daily watering and great deals of waiting. It took seven weeks for the mushrooms to be ready for harvest. While the students waited, we learnt about mushrooms, the growing process and students wrote poetry on the topic.
When harvesting time came students were given the opportunity to cook and the mushrooms they had waited so patiently to grow. For some this was the first time they had tried a mushroom! A truly wonderful experience with smiles all round.

Students in 5/6 have embarked on a journey to learn more about poetry during literacy sessions. So far we have looked at similies and acrostic poems. All students have enjoyed reading about Waltzing Matilda and The Man From Snowy River – classic Australian stories that require some translation of words from the 1800’s! Activities have included comparing the verses to the song and video versions.
This term has been a big one for 5/6B. The literacy focus was on persuasive texts where we learned how to improve our arguments with high modality words, rhetorical questions and supporting evidence. Maths dove into the world of fractions, percentages and decimals which tied in with our Potato Olympics. During this, students competed in a variety of events such as races, shot put, quizzes and puzzles. They then measured their results and used their mathematical knowledge to complete a booklet. Science and Inquiry focussed on how we can use and manipulate light to see. Finally, in the last few weeks our Year 6’s spent a couple of hours each week at Cosgrove High School ready for their transition next year. Their visits included a tour, an art class and a cooking class. Wishing you all a relaxing holiday, and we will see you in Term 4.
Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Banner
Students across the school have participated in creating the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery banner. 5/6 A students have been great buddies to the younger classes so that they could paint. The focus was ‘To The Max’. Included were images of above and below the ground, Indigenous symbols telling a story, Kunanyi and science studies from Term 2 were reflected in the artwork by using fungi and their connection to every living thing on earth. The banner that is now finished, will be displayed on the fence of TMAG – so when you next drive by have a look!
